"Cormorant behind bars"
Walthmamstow Wetlands is a vital and protected habitat for cormorants, which were once victim to intense persecution in the UK as industries fought with bird populations over access to prime fishing locations. After years of dedicated conservation work, cormorants are once again able to thrive and fish alongside humans in peace. On this particular day I'd ironically just missed the perfect moment of a cormorant catching a fish. But the disappointment quickly passed when I paused under a pylon and spotted this slightly bemused looking cormorant perched above. Without a reliable tripod, getting this shot overhead was quite a feat of endurance. Whilst to us it might seem out of place to see wildlife in such industrial surroundings, I'm sure I looked far more out of place struggling with my heavy camera than this cormorant chilling in its urban haven.
My image of a resting Cormorant reached the
final judging round of the BWPA 2024
'Urban wildlife' category.
